Adelaide's tramway history

This photo taken within Hackney Workshops shows a sign writer preparing a new destination roll to go in a tram. As can be seen, the list of suburbs the trams serviced was extensive. Photo: MTT.

This part of the Museum website is dedicated to providing a history of the former Adelaide tram system, showing where it went, how it was run and telling some of the stories that went along with the trams.

As well as the electric tramways, the horse tramway system and the later trolley bus system has also been featured. A review of the current Glenelg - City - Adelaide Entertainment Centre tramway has also been included showing how the Glenelg line survived and the recent extensions and upgrades that have occured.

An F type 'Drop Centre' tram is on a service to Col Light Gardens and is seen passing through the Millswood Underpass on Goodwood Road during the mid 1950s. A suburban train service to Belair and Bridgewater can be seen passing above. Photo: Noel Reed.
